Be aware that there are rental scams out there, and that there are individuals who will try to find ways to mislead and defraud consumers, we wanted you to be aware of this situation.

In order to protect yourself and your family during your housing search:

• Never disclose your financial information to anyone over phone or text.
• Deal with owners and managers via in person meetings, and with owners/agents who allow you access to the property before you exchange any money.
• Check with the Tulare County Assessor's office to verify that the owner you are communicating with actually owns the property.

Be skeptical if:

• Anyone wants a fee or deposit before showing you a property.
• Anyone asks for a Western Union or Moneygram transfer in exchange for showing you a home or holding it for you.
• A rental cost is significantly less than other homes in the neighborhood.
• Owners or property managers only want to communicate with you via email or text instead of face-to-face.
• Owners are from another country and request a deposit to be sent to them.
